The rebellious Percys having marched troops to …

Years: 1403 - 1403

The rebellious Percys having marched troops to link with support promised by Glyndwer’s Wales-based rebellion, Henry of Monmouth leads the royal army against the rebels in the north before Glyndwer can aid them.

The crown prince arrives in Shrewsbury on July 21, just before Hotspur, forcing the rebel army to camp outside the town.

Henry forces the battle before the Earl of Northumberland manages to reach Shrewsbury.

Thus, Henry is able to fight before the full strength of the rebels is present and on ground of his own choosing.

Henry is badly wounded in the face by an arrow but continues to fight alongside his men.

When the cry goes out that Hotspur has fallen, the rebels' resistance begins to falter and crumble.

By the end of the day, Hotspur is dead and his rebellion is over; his troops surrender.

The battle had apparently lasted three hours.

It is claimed that over three hundred knights and another twenty thousand men-at-arms fell on the field, forty-six hundred of King Henry's force were killed and thousands more on both sides died of wounds, broken limbs and injuries over the next few weeks.

The king, upon being brought Hotspur’s body after the battle, is said to have wept and ordered the corpse buried in Whitchurch, Shropshire.
