The Cape settlement continues to expand throughout the eighteenth century through internal growth of the European population and the continued importation of slaves.
The approximately three thousand Europeans and enslaved people at the Cape in 1700 had increased by the end of the century to nearly twenty thousand Europeans, almost twenty-five thousand enslaved people, and another fifteeen thousand Khoikhoi and mixed-race people living within the boundaries of the settlement.
