Hakodate bugyō Muragaki Norimasa had gone directly to the Russian Consulate in Hakodate in mid-July,  demanding the departure of the ship to the Russian Consul Goshkevitch.

As this strategy did not work, the Japanese had asked the British to intervene, as they also have an interest in preventing the Russians from extending their influence in Asia.

Admiral Hope had arrived in Tsushima with two warships on August 28, and on September 19, 1861 Posadnik finally has to leave Tsushima.
