The three Laotian kingdoms (Vientiane, Luang Prabang, Champasak) had become Siamese tributaries after Maha Kshatriyaseuk had conquered them in 1778.

Anouvong, or Chao Anou, the son of the king of Vientiane, had been taken to Bangkok as a captive, spending nearly thirty years in Siam and joining the Siamese forces in wars with Burma.

In 1805, Anouvong had returned to his city-state of Viangchan, or Vientiane, to be crowned as king.

The year after the death of Rama II in 1824, Siam had been dragged into conflicts with the British Empire.

Anouvong had seen this as an opportunity to free his kingdom from the Siamese rule.

In 1825, returning from the funeral of Rama II in Bangkok, Anouvong had captured Korat and forced the city to be evacuated.

However, the Korat captives had rebelled under the supervision of Mo, wife of the ruler of Korat.

Anouvong then returned to Vientiane.

Jessadabodindra had then sent his brother Maha Sakdi Ponsep and Phraya Rajsupawadi to defeat the armies of Anouvong in Isan.

Anouvong had fled to Vietnam and the Siamese had captured Vientiane, ordering the evacuation of the city and, in 1827-28, the total destruction of Vientiane.

Anouvong convinces the Vietnamese emperor to supply him with troops in his failed attempt at liberating Viangchan from Siamese control.

Most of the borrowed Vietnamese soldiers desert on the way to Viangchan, where Anouvong meets defeat at Nongkai and flees to Tran Ninh (Xieng Khouang), whose ruler delivers him to the Thais in 1828 rather than face invasion.

Vientiane is razed to the ground, extinguishing two centuries of prosperity.
