The town of Ufa, as it is named in 1586, has grown up around a fortress built in 1574 on a defensive site in a loop formed by the the Belaya (White) River just below its confluence with the Ufa River to protect the trade route across the Ural Mountains from Kazan to Tyumen.
Today the capital and the administrative, political, economic, scientific and cultural center of the Republic of Bashkortostan, with a population of 1,064,200 (2010 est.); 1,042,437 (2002 Census), Ufa is one of the largest cities in Russia.
