Sultan Mahmud II abolishes the posts of Reis ül-Küttab and Kahya Bey on March 11, 1836,  and establishes the Ottoman ministries of Foreign Affairs and of the Interior in their place.

The Reis ül-Küttab, or Reis Efendi, translated as "chief of the scribes" or "head clerk", was originally the head of the chancery of the Imperial Council, evolving into an analog to a Foreign Minister.
