The Turkish army resumes its offensive in early October, after the truce expires, and the Serbian position quickly becomes desperate.

As a result, Russia issues an ultimatum on October 31, 1876, requiring the Ottoman Empire to stop the hostilities and sign a new truce with Serbia within forty-eight hours.

This is supported by the partial mobilization of the Russian army (up to twenty divisions).

The Sultan accepts the conditions of the ultimatum.
