The two kings stay on in Sicily…
April 1191 CE
The two kings stay on in Sicily for a while, but this results in increasing tensions between them and their men, with Philip Augustus plotting with Tancred against Richard.
The two kings finally meet to clear the air and reach an agreement, including the end of Richard's betrothal to Philip's sister Alys (who had supposedly been the mistress of Richard's father Henry II).
Richard has had Berengaria brought to him by his mother Eleanor of Aquitaine.
Since Richard s already on the Third Crusade, having wasted no time in setting off after his coronation, the two women had a long and difficult journey to catch up with him.
They had arrived at Messina in March during Lent (when the marriage could not take place) in 1191 and are joined by Richard's sister Joan, the widowed Queen of Sicily.
The two women have became good friends and Berengaria is left in Joan's custody.
Richard, with a large fleet, leaves Messina in April 1191 in order to reach Acre, but a storm disperses the fleet.
