Louis-Hippolyte Lafontaine and Robert Baldwin become the first Joint Premiers of the Province of Canada to be democratically elected on March 11, 1848.

The Lafontaine-Baldwin government will battle for the restoration of the official status of the French language, which had been abolished in 1841 with the Union Act, and the principles of responsible government and the double-majority in the voting of bills.
