Most of the Pacific Squadron proceeds down…
October 1847 CE
Most of the Pacific Squadron proceeds down the California coast after upper California is secure, capturing all major cities of the Baja California Territory and capturing or destroying nearly all Mexican vessels in the Gulf of California.
Other ports, not on the peninsula, are taken as well.
The objective of the Pacific Coast Campaign is to capture Mazatlán, Sinaloa, on the Mexican mainland, which is a major supply base for Mexican forces.
Numerous Mexican ships are also captured by this squadron, with the USS Cyane given credit for eighteen ships captured and numerous destroyed.
USS Independence has assisted in the blockade of the Mexican Pacific coast, capturing the Mexican ship Correo and a launch on May 16, 1847.
Entering the Gulf of California, Independence, Congress, and Cyane seize La Paz, then capture and burn the small Mexican fleet at Guaymas, Sonora, on October 19, 1847.
