Fearing revolt, Méndez arrests Manuel Antonio Ay, the principal Maya leader of Chichimilá, accused of planning a revolt, and executes him at the town square of Valladolid.
Searching for other insurgents, Méndez burns the town of Tepich and repressed its residents. In the following months, several Maya towns will be sacked and many people arbitrarily killed.
