The young Scottish king escapes in June…
June 1583 CE
The young Scottish king escapes in June 1583, ten months after his capture.
Both Arran—a cousin of the 3rd earl, whose honors he had claimed in 1581—and his rival, Lennox, had been deprived of office when the Protestant lords seized power by the raid of Ruthven (1582); but they in turn are overthrown and driven into exile by Arran, who now becomes ascendant.
After a brief reconciliation with James VI he joins the rebellion of the Earl of Mar and the master of Glamis, and sentence of attainder is pronounced against all three.
