Vincent van Gogh, despite his illness, paints one masterwork after another during this time, including Cypresses, and The Starry Night (1889; The Museum of Modern Art, New York).

While in Arles, and Saint-Rémy as well, Vincent has sent his canvases to Theo van Gogh, who marries Johanna Bonger in Paris in spring 1889.

Theo praises the new paintings: "They have an intensity of color you have not attained beforebut you have gone even further than that I see that you have achieved in many of your canvasesthe quintessence of your thoughts about nature and living beings."

Vincent, through Theo, exhibits two recent canvases at the Salon des Indépendants in 1889.
