June 1652 CE
A set of rumors indicating that Lord Baltimore would lose his charter had begun in 1651, as the colonial assembly of Maryland and its neighbors in Virginia had publicly declared their support for the King.
Parliament has appointed Protestant commissioners loyal to their cause to subdue the colonies and force their submission to Parliamentary authority.
One of Maryland’s two Commissioners is none other than the Virginian William Claiborne, who had battled the Calverts unsuccessfully in the 1630s over title to Kent Island, and who is a staunch advocate for the Anglican Church.
The other is Puritan leader Richard Bennet.
Claiborne and Bennet had removed Stone as Governor in March 1652, only to reinstate him in June.
