November 1580 CE
Thomas Butler, 10th earl of Ormonde, is appointed military governor of Munster in 1580 to put down the rebellion of his rival, Desmond.
The mediocrity of Desmond, who proves wholly deficient as a military commander, may well keep outstanding figures in the north and west out of the movement.
The rebels are defeated, and in November 1580, English troops besiege and massacre the invasion force of Italians and Spaniards at Dún an Óir (“Golden Fort”), Smerwick Harbour, County Kerry.
The tide turns in favor of the English.
