A Japanese fleet, with Todo Takatora in overall command, engages the entire Korean navy on August 28, 1597, at Chilchonryang strait, and when Won Gyun fails to effectively use his cannons, the battle result is one hundred and fifty-seven sunken Korean ships and twenty thousand casualties.
Won Gyun and his remaining forces are killed after he struggles ashore to a Japanese fort.
This battle will be Japan's only naval victory of both campaigns.
