Three new commissioners arrive at Le Cap…
Three new commissioners arrive at Le Cap on September 18 to enforce the April 4 decree.
Léger-Félicité Sonthonax, Étienne Polverel, and Jean-Antoine Ailhaud are all Jacobins.
The colonists immediately suspect a plan to emancipate the slaves (which may or may not have been a part of Sonthonax's original program).
The commissioners are accompanied by two thousand troops of the line and four thousand National Guards, under the command of General Desparbés.
The commissioners distrust Desparbés and get on poorly with him because of their tendency to trespass on his authority.
The commissioners soon deport Blanchelande to France.
