The uprising begins on November 11, 1750 after the expected new regent of Tibet, Gyurme Namgyal, is assassinated by two Manchu ambans.

Mohammad Hasan Khan, leader of the Qajar tribe, had been driven from Astarabad in the early 1740s, but after the death of Nader Shah in 1747, he appears to have joined Shahrukh Afshar and been appointed beglerbeg of Astarabad and leader of all the nomadic groups in the province by Suleiman II; after the latter is deposed, Mohammad Hasan becomes virtually independent and extends his power to Mazandaran and Gilan.

John Cleland, soon to be known for his erotic novel Fanny Hill (Memoirs of a Woman of Pleasure) had begun courting the Portuguese in a vain attempt to refound the Portuguese East India Company.

Cleland had been arrested in 1748, for a debt of eight hundred and forty pounds (equivalent to a purchasing power of about one hundred thousand pounds in 2005) and committed to Fleet Prison, where he remained for over a year.

It was while he was in prison that Cleland finalized Memoirs of a Woman of Pleasure.

The text probably existed in manuscript for a number of years before Cleland developed it for publication.

The novel had been published in two installments, in November 1748 and February 1749.

Released from prison in March of that year, Cleland had been arrested the following November along with the publishers and printer of Fanny Hill.

In court, Cleland had disavowed the novel.

The book was then officially withdrawn, never to be legally published again for over a hundred years.

However, it continues to sell well and to be published in pirated editions.

In March 1750, Cleland produces a highly bowdlerized version of the book, but it, too, is proscribed; eventually, the prosecution against Cleland is dropped, and the expurgated edition continues to sell legally.

John Michell studies magnetism and discovers the "inverse-square law", the fact that the magnetic force exerted by each pole of a magnet decreases in proportion to the square of the distance between them.

His 1750 paper Treatise of Artificial Magnets, which is written for seamen and instrument makers and intended as a practical manual on how to make magnets, includes a list of the "Properties of Magnetical Bodies" that represent a major contribution to the understanding of magnetism.

In a work of some eighty pages, he presents an easy and expeditious method of producing magnets that are superior to the best natural magnets.

Besides the description of the method of magnetization which still bears his name, this work contains a variety of accurate observations about magnetism, and features a lucid exposition of the nature of magnetic induction.

John Michell was born in 1724 in Eakring, in Nottinghamshire, the son of Gilbert Michell, a priest, and Obedience Gerrard. Gilbert was the son of William Michell and Mary Taylor of Kenwyn, Cornwall; Obedience was the daughter of Ralph and Hannah Gerrard of London.

He is educated at Queens' College, Cambridge, and will become a Fellow of Queens.

The British response to the Acadian exodus accelerates it.

Cornawallis orders, for example, Captain John Handfield and two companies of troops to Fort Vieux Logis in Grand Pre with instructions to patrol the roads to prevent Acadians from leaving.

Patrols also happen throughout the Cobequid. (On one such patrol, Noel Doiron’s priest Jacques Girard had been arrested. This action had precipitated Doiron leaving Noel, Nova Scotia for Point Prime, Ile St. Jean in the spring of 1750.)

The British eventually forbade all assemblies of the Acadians, and they have been ordered to supply the British commanders with provisions and offer their labor on demand, at prices set by regulation.

Not surprisingly, many Acadians refuse to supply the British, and by the summer of 1750 Acadians by the hundreds are in flight from the province.
