Trieste remains under Western occupation, as it is contested by Yugoslavia and Italy.
The peace treaty with Italy signed in Paris in 1947 creates the Free Territory of Trieste, to be guaranteed by the United Nations Security Council.
The Free Territory status is unworkable, however, and deadlock immediately follows the ratification of the treaty.
