Simultaneously, in the east, the Ottomans crosss…
November 1853 CE
Simultaneously, in the east, the Ottomans crosss the Danube at Silistra and attack the Russians at Oltenița on November 4.
The resulting Battle of Oltenița is the first engagement following the declaration of war: an Ottoman army under the command of Omar Pasha is defending its fortified positions from the Russian forces led by General Peter Dannenberg, until the Russians are ordered to withdraw.
The battle is indecisive, with both sides claiming victory.
The Russian attack is called off just when Dannenberg's troops reach the Ottoman fortifications, and they move back in full order, yet unwillingly.
The Turks hold their positions, but their success is insignificant, and they retreat afterwards.
