The Turkish troops occupying Chios, in addition…
June 1822 CE
Approximately three-quarters of the population of one hundred and twenty thousand are killed, enslaved or die of disease.
It is estimated that two thousand people remained on the island after twenty-one thousand managed to flee, fifty two thousand were enslaved and fifty two thousand massacred.
Tens of thousands of survivors will disperse throughout Europe and become part of the Chian Diaspora.
Another source says that approximately twenty thousand Chians were killed or starved to death.
Some young Greeks enslaved during the massacre are adopted by wealthy Ottomans and convert to Islam.
Some will rise to levels of prominence in the Ottoman Empire, such as Georgios Stravelakis (later renamed Mustapha Khaznadar) and Ibrahim Edhem Pasha.
There is outrage when the events are reported in Europe and French painter Eugène Delacroix will created a painting depicting the events that occurred; his painting is named Scenes from the Massacres of Chios.
