USS Independence has assisted in the blockade of the Mexican Pacific coast, capturing the Mexican ship Correo and a launch on May 16, 1847.

She had supported the capture of Guaymas, Sonora, on October 19, 1847, and lands bluejackets and Marines to occupy Mazatlán, Sinaloa, on November 11, 1847.
