Valentinus, who had carried out his assignment…
September 641 CE
Valentinus, who had carried out his assignment and secured the support of the army, now leads the troops to Chalcedon, across the Bosporus from Constantinople, and demands that Constans be made co-emperor.
Bowing to this pressure, in late September Constans is crowned co-emperor by Heraklonas.
In an effort to reduce the importance of this act, however, Heraklonas also has two of his younger brothers, David and Marinus, raised to the rank of co-emperor at the same time.
This merely irritates the supporters of Constans II, and Valentinus, who has himself been "rewarded" by being given the title of comes excubitorum, spreads rumors that Martina and Heraklonas intend to eliminate Constans and his supporters.
