Vignola designs the Villa Lante at Bagnaia …
Years: 1566 - 1566
Vignola designs the Villa Lante at Bagnaia in 1566.
In designing its magnificent gardens for a select, discerning company, Vignola orchestrates light, shade, color and water to trace the story of humankind, drawing forms from Islam, the medieval garden, and Rome.
A watery thread links the sunlit lower garden, the geometry of which represents the brilliant present, with the shadowy upper gardens, allegories for a dimly seen past.
The absence of biblical references is surprising, as Vignola has created this retreat for two cardinals.
