Dunmore's search of the Great Bridge area…
November 1775 CE
Leaving a company of troops to defend the causeway to the bridge and begin construction of defenses, he takes one hundred regulars and twenty Loyalists toward Kemp's Landing.
The Patriot ambush is spoiled when Hutchings' inexperienced militiamen open fire too early.
Dunmore's disciplined regulars return fire, moving through the woods to flush out the rebels.
The militia scatters, and in the ensuing chase, Hutchings is captured by one of his former slaves.
Lawson is able to escape the battle, but will be captured a few days later.
In total, eighteen Patriots are captured and seven are killed; one British soldier suffers a single minor wound.
After securing the town, Dunmore raises the British standard, and reads out the text of his proclamation.
