Washington moves the army closer to Yorktown…
September 1781 CE
Throughout the day several British cannon fire on the Americans but there are few casualties.
Fire is also exchanged between American riflemen and Hessian Jägers.
Cornwallis pulls back from all of his outer defenses, except for the Fusilier's redoubt on the west side of the town and redoubts 9 and 10 in the east.
Cornwallis has his forces occupy the earthworks immediately surrounding the town because he had received a letter from Clinton that promises a relief force of five thousand men within a week and he wishes to tighten his lines.
The Americans and the French occupy the abandoned defenses and begin to establish their own batteries there.
With the British outer defenses in their hands, allied engineers begin to lay out positions for the artillery.
The men improve their works and deepen their trenches.
The British also work on improving their defenses.
