Stark's militiamen are busy disarming the prisoners…
August 1777 CE
Seeing the Americans in disarray, they immediately press their attack.
After hastily regrouping, Stark's forces try to hold their ground against the new German onslaught, but begin to fall back.
Before their lines collapse, Warner's men arrive on the scene to reinforce Stark's troops. Pitched battle continues until dark, when both sides disengage.
Breymann begins a hasty retreat; he has lost one quarter of his force and all of his artillery pieces.
Total German and British losses at Bennington are recorded at two hundred and seven dead and seven hundred captured; American losses include thirty Americans dead and forty wounded.
The battle is at times particularly brutal when Loyalists meet Patriots, as in some cases they come from the same communities.
The prisoners, who are first kept in Bennington, will eventually be marched to Boston.
