The center of Islamic power, with Baghdad…
1260 CE
The center of Islamic power, with Baghdad and Damascus ravaged, transfers to the Egyptian Mamluks in Cairo, where the death of the last Ayyubid sultan has been followed by a period of confusion that is to continue throughout the first years of the Mamluk sultanate.
Baibars, having angered the first Mamluk sultan, Aybak, had fled with other Mamluk leaders to Syria and stayed there until 1260, when they are welcomed back to Egypt by sultan Qutuz.
He restores them to their place in the army and confers a village upon Baibars.
Within a few months of Baibars' arrival, the invading Mongols occupying Gaza send an envoy to Cairo to demand the submission of Qutuz, whose reply is the execution of the envoy.
The two powers prepare for battle.
