1518 CE
Zwingli, basing his powerful sermons on the Scriptures, denounces the mercenary trade, drops his own papal subsidy, and attacks ecclesiastical abuses.
The post of the Leutpriestertum (people's priest) of the Grossmünster at Zurich had become vacant in late 1518.
The canons of the foundation that administers the Grossmünster recognizes Zwingli's reputation as a fine preacher and writer.
His connection with humanists is a decisive factor as several canons are sympathetic to Erasmian reform.
In addition, his opposition to the French and to mercenary service is welcomed by Zurich politicians.
On December 11, 1518, the canons elect Zwingli to become the stipendiary priest and on December 27 he moves permanently to Zurich.
