Utah joins the Union in 1896.
The Latter Day Saints Church banned polygamy in the 1890 Manifesto.
When Utah applied for statehood again, it was accepted.
One of the conditions for granting Utah statehood was that a ban on polygamy be written into the state constitution.
This will be a condition required of other western states that later admitted into the Union.
Statehood is officially granted on January 4, 1896.
The U.S. House of Representatives does not seat B. H. Roberts of Utah, a practicing polygamist, on January 17, 1900, for this reason.
