The Saxons erect the kingdom of Sussex (South Saxon) in 477.
Aelle, first king of the South Saxons according to the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle, landed on the Sussex coast (England), with his three sons, near Cymenshore.
The Britons engaged him upon landing but his superior force besieges them at Pevensey and drives them into the Weald.
Saxon coastal holdings over the next nine years will be gradually expanded.
Cissa of Sussex becomes king of the South Saxons in 514 (approximate date) after the death of his father, Aele, according to the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle.
Offa of Mercia confirms two charters of Ædelberht, and in 772 grants land himself in Sussex, with Oswald, dux Sutsax', as a witness.
It is probable that about this time Offa annexed the kingdom of Sussex, as several persons, Osmund, Ælfwald and Oslac, who had previously used the royal title, now sign with that of dux.
