Kaumualiʻi, aliʻi nui of Kauaʻi, watches as Kamehameha builds up his invading force and decides he will have a better chance in negotiation than battle.
He may also have been influenced by foreign merchants, who see the continuing feud between Kamehameha and Kaumualiʻi as bad for the sandalwood trade.
Kaumualiʻi in April 1810 becomes a vassal of Kamehameha, who therefore emerges as the sole sovereign of the unified Hawaiian islands.
