E. W. Kemble (born January 18, 1861, in Sacramento, California; died September 19, 1933, in Ridgefield, Connecticut) is an American illustrator, specializing in cartoons of African Americans.
He is perhaps cartooning's supreme delineator of blacks, and his characterizations are often sympathetic.
He takes care to study the real urban and rural environs and living conditions of blacks.
As such, his caricatures are never absurdly exaggerated, although he uses every thematic convention to the fullest.
Kemble produces many sensitive, almost photographic portraits of African Americans.
