Gustav Bauernfeind (b. August 4, 1848, Sulz/Neckar Germany; d. Jerusalem, 1904) studied architecture at Polytech Institute in Stuttgart and worked at the architectural firm of Professor Wilhelm Bäumer and later of Adolph Gnauth were he was introduced to painting.
Advised by friends to change the style of his paintings in accordance with the contemporary Orientalist genre, he begins traveling from from Munich to Egypt, Syria, and Palestine.
