Jacob Maris (August 25, 1837, The Hague - August 7, 1899, Karlsbad) is a Dutch painter, who with his brothers Willem and Matthijs belongs to what has come to be known as the Hague School of painters.
The subject in all of Jacob Maris's paintings, whether in watercolor or oil, and in his etchings, is subordinate to the atmospheric effect, as in the Grey Tower, Old Amsterdam (c. 1880).
This mastery of atmosphere influences many of his contemporaries.
