John Smeaton FRS (June 8, 1724 – October 28, 1792) is an English civil engineer responsible for the design of bridges, canals, harbors and lighthouses.
He is also a capable mechanical engineer and an eminent physicist.
Smeaton is the first self-proclaimed civil engineer, and often regarded as the "father of civil engineering".
He pioneers the use of hydraulic lime in concrete, using pebbles and powdered brick as aggregate.
