Kou Qianzhi (365–448) is a Taoist reformer who re-envisions many of the ceremonies and rites of the Way of the Celestial Master form of Taoism and reformulates its theology into a new movement known as The Northern Celestial Masters.
His influence is such that he has Taoism established as the official state religion of the Northern Wei dynasty (386–534); this act, however, embroils Taoism in long and often bloody factional political struggles.
There is a saying that Kou Qianzhi once secluded himself in Mount Huashan for his Taoist meditation.
