chancellor during the reign of Emperor Taizong of Tang
571 CE
to 639 CE
Wang Gui (571–639), courtesy name Shujie, formally Duke Yi of Yongning, is a chancellor during the reign of Emperor Taizong of Tang (Li Shimin).
He had previously served Li Shimin's older brother Li Jiancheng the Crown Prince, with whom Li Shimin had been locked in an intense rivalry during the reign of their father Emperor Gaozu, but after Li Shimin kills Li Jiancheng and then takes the throne, he knows that Wang is faithful to Li Jiancheng and is capable, and therefore retains him, eventually making him chancellor.
Wang is known for his honest and blunt criticism of the emperor, and for that is honored by Emperor Taizong, who appreciates such criticism.
