A peasant revolt breaks out in Vendsyssel,…
July 1086 CE
A peasant revolt breaks out in Vendsyssel, where Canute is staying, in early 1086 before the Danish invasion fleet can reassemble.
Canute first flees to Schleswig, and eventually to Odense.
Canute and his men take refuge on July 10, 1086, inside the wooden St. Alban's Priory in Odense.
The rebels storm into the church and slay Canute, along with his brother Benedict and seventeen of their followers, before the altar.
Canute, according to chronicler Ælnoth of Canterbury, dies following a lance thrust in the flank.
Because of his martyrdom and advocacy of the Church, Canute will quickly begin to be considered a saint.
Denmark under the reign of Olaf will suffer from crop failure, which is seen as divine retribution for the sacrilege killing of Canute.
Miracles are soon reported as taking place at his grave, and his canonization will be begin to be sought during Olaf's reign.
