Alexander VI is known for his patronage…
October 1492 CE
Alexander VI is known for his patronage of the arts, and in his days a new architectural era is initiated in Rome with the coming of Bramante.
Raphael, Michelangelo and Pinturicchio all work for him.
He commissions Pinturicchio, a prolific Umbrian painter, to lavishly paint a suite of six rooms in the Apostolic Palace in the Vatican, which are today known as the Borgia Apartments.
He takes a great interest in theatrics, and he even had the comedy Menaechmi, often considered Plautus’ greatest play, performed in his apartments.
Pinturicchio begins work in autumn 1492 on the brilliant frescos of the so-called Borgia Apartments.
