The mutineer Fletcher Christian, after leaving Tahiti…
January 1790 CE
He then formed the idea of settling on Pitcairn Island, far to the east of Tahiti; the island had been reported in 1767, but its exact location never verified.
After months of searching, Christian rediscovers the island on January 15, 1790, one hundred and eighty-eight nautical miles (three hundred and forty-eight kilometers; two hundred and sixteen miles) east of its recorded position.
This longitudinal error contributes to the mutineers' decision to settle on Pitcairn.
