Bohemond VI of Antioch, under the influence…
1268 CE
Bohemond VI of Antioch, under the influence of his father-in-law Hethum I of Armenia, had voluntarily submitted to Mongol authority in 1260, while Abaqa's father Hulagu was in power, making Antioch and Tripoli vassal states of the Ilkhanate.
The most important town taken by Baibars is Antioch, which he captures in May 1268, slaughtering all the city's inhabitants; it is thought that forty thousand Christians were massacred and another one hundred thousand enslaved.
The destruction of the city of Antioch is so great as to permanently negate the city's importance.
