The principality of Shughnon-Rushon in the western Pamir Mountains becomes a new object of contention between Britain and Russia when Afghanistan and Russia dispute territory here.
An 1895 treaty assigns the disputed territory to Bukhara, and at the same time puts the eastern Pamirs under Russian rule.
