Cardinal Wolsey Hosts Emperor Charles at Calais (1520)
Immediately following the Field of the Cloth of Gold, English Cardinal Thomas Wolsey hosts Emperor Charles V in Calais, aiming to balance England’s diplomatic position between France and the Holy Roman Empire. Wolsey, chiefly motivated by personal ambition—including his preparation for a future papal conclave—organizes a prolonged arbitration conference at Calais. The conference, lasting until April 1522, achieves little practical result.
Despite Wolsey’s stated commitment to peace, his diplomatic strategy soon shifts, aligning England closely with Emperor Charles. This realignment significantly deteriorates Anglo-French relations, setting the diplomatic stage for the Italian War of 1521–1526.
