January 1556 CE
Charles V has voluntarily abdicated in several stages.
After a bitter quarrel with his brother Ferdinand, Archduke of Austria and king of Hungary and Bohemia, who insists successfully on his succession to the imperial title, against the claims of Charles' son Philip, he leaves the Holy Roman Empire to Ferdinand.
Charles leaves all his other dominions, including the Low Countries and the New World empire, to Philip, who on January 16, 1556, succeeds to the Spanish throne as King Felipe II.
