Charles XII of Sweden, following his victories…
July 1701 CE
Charles XII of Sweden, following his victories over Denmark and Russia in 1700, escalates the conflict in the Great Northern War by an invasion of Poland.
In what is known as the Crossing of the Düna, the Swedes defeat the army of Saxony (at this time a Polish territory) at the River Daugava, or Dvina on July 9, 1701.
In preparation for his attack on Riga, king Charles XII had ordered the first bridge across the Daugava, made of anchored and interconnected boat ropes.
The city of Riga is left with the structure after the Swedish victory,.
