244 CE to 255 CE
Cniva, a Gothic chieftain, invades the Roman Empire and successfully conquers the city of Philippopolis, the present-day Bulgarian city Plovdiv.
He kills the emperor Decius and his son Herennius Etruscus at the Battle of Abritus in 251 as he is attempting to leave the Empire.
This is the first time a Roman Emperor is killed in combat against barbarians.
Cniva is allowed to leave with his spoils and is paid tribute to stay out of the empire.
