Stepan Khalturin successfully blows up part of the Winter Palace in an attempt to assassinate Tsar Alexander II of Russia on February 17, 1880.

Although the Tsar escapes unharmed, eleven soldiers are killed and forty-five wounded.

Khalturin, a Russian revolutionary and a member of Narodnaya Volya, escapes to Moscow and then to Odessa.

He will be hanged on the orders of Alexander's son and successor, Alexander III, in 1882 after the assassination of a police official.
