April 1111 CE
Emperor Henry V had agreed, in the 1111 Concordat of Sutri, to renounce investiture rights in return a promise of coronation and for renunciation by German bishops of all lands acquired by imperial grant.
This would restore to the Empire of all Christendom, which has been in the hands of the German state and church since the time of Charlemagne.
This is a treaty impossible to execute, and Henry, whose consent to it is said to have been conditional on its acceptance by the princes and bishops of Germany, probably foresees that it will occasion a breach between the German clergy and the pope.
