...Ferrara, but dies on October 20, 1187, before he can give effect to his intentions.
According to legend, he died of grief upon hearing news of the defeat of the Crusaders in July 1187 at the Battle of Hattin.
The day after the death of Pope Urban III, Alberto di Morra, Chancellor of the Holy Roman Church from 1178, is elected pope and takes the name Gregory VIII in honor of Pope Gregory VII.
He is consecrated on October 25.
His previous dealings with Frederick Barbarossa put the church back in a friendly relationship with the Holy Roman Emperor.
On October 29, in response to the defeat of the crusader Kingdom of Jerusalem at the Battle of Hattin, Gregory issued the papal bull Audita tremendi calling for the Third Crusade.
Jerusalem itself had fallen to Saladin on October 2, but news of this had not yet reached Europe by the time the bull is issued at the end of the month.
